This Week In Jeep:

One golf course will be Reopening this month with a whole new twist on the game.

On Memorial Day, Deer Run Jeep Golf is expected to open on Logtown Road in Ocean City Maryland. For nearly 20 years this was a very popular golf course with beautiful facilities. That is before it closed in 2015. However some new life is being injected into the course, and it has everything to do with Jeeps. There will of course be the traditional golf that we are all familiar with, and they’ll even have a put-put course too.

“It’s going to be something very different,” said Ed Colbert, owner of Deer Run.

According to Colbert, he closed the golf course in 2015 when his wife was ill. His daughter and son-in-law recently approached him with a unique concept, that of jeep golf. “They’re jeep enthusiasts,” Colbert said. “They came up with the idea of using jeeps as golf carts.” Deer Run will offer a nine-hole jeep course, where patrons will use their jeeps to travel the golf cart path between holes. The facility will also offer an area for footgolf, a game in which players kick a soccer ball into a cup in as few shots as possible. “It’s all over the place and growing like crazy,” Colbert said. The third game offered at Deer Run will be pitch and putt, a type of golf. While Deer Run’s jeep course is expected to open Memorial Day weekend, Colbert said it would be some time still before the footgolf and pitch and putt courses are opened. “It’s hard to bring back an overgrown golf course, these things take a little time” he said. In spite of the work ahead, Colbert is eager to get the course up-and-running. He envisions it as a family oriented golf park with a draw that can’t be found elsewhere. While neighbors of the 170-acre property initially expressed concern over the concept when it was brought before the Worcester County Board of Zoning Appeals, Colbert said he worked with them.

This Week In Jeep:

A Quick Look at The Numbers

It’s a new month and that means we can take a look back at how Jeep has done over the last 30 days, and to be honest, the numbers are impressive. Sales of the Jeep Wrangler set an all-time record for the second consecutive month and are up 42 percent through April while the company was ramping up production of the new JL model and winding down production of the previous JK model, boosting availability well above where it has been historically. What I mean by that is with basically two production lines going for the one model, Jeep has been figuratively flooding the market with new Wranglers. Although JK production ended last week, FCA reports a 63-day supply of unsold Wranglers on hand. Might be a good time to head to the dealership and work a deal.

The End of an Era.

There’s always a bit of mixed emotions when it comes to the passing of the torch from an old model line to the new. A mix of trepidation and nostalgia, mixed with a little apprehension and a touch of curiosity. This has never been more true than right now. As last week we say goodbye to the first truly modern, easy-to-live-with Wrangler. Last Friday the very last Jeep Wrangler JK rolled off the Toledo Ohio assembly line. This particular Jeep  caps JK Wrangler production at an incredible 2,165,678 units since it debuted in 2006. Impressive numbers to say the least. And since I know Tony is over there twitching, and trying to get NASA to realign satellites as we speak to get a look at the COLOR of this very last JK, I’m happy to report that it was not red. It was a white Unlimited Rubicon model, and we’ll (literally) never see its like again. Now, normally the transition of one generation of a product to another very similar generation wouldn’t be that newsworthy, but in the case of the JK it is. I don’t have to tell you, that people love their Jeeps, and that is proven at countless gatherings and events around the world year after year. We Jeepers are an industrious and passionate bunch, and in the past that meant making some sacrifices for the sake of owning a vehicle like a Wrangler, particularly if it was to be used as an everyday driver. The Wrangler was never very large, nor did it have much of a back seat or storage for that matter, so for families, it was a challenge to use as a normal everyday vehicle. Back in the early days of the Wrangler, most families had to either be super hard-core or trade up to a Cherokee to get the room. The Jeep Wrangler also had a reputation for a spine-ruining ride, one designed to be amazingly capable off-road with little consideration for the pavement in between trails. All that changed with the launch of the JK-series Wrangler in 2006. Sure the TJ was also a vast improvement over the YJ back then, but the JK was the pinnacle of Jeep engineering at the time of its debut.
