This Week in Jeep:

Changes to large(ish) S.E. Wisconsin Jeep Clubs

Attention all Jeepers within the sound of my voice in the south east portion of Wisconsin.  Some big changes are happening in the club structure of for the Wrangler Riders of the Sheboygan and Allenton chapters.  As of Friday of last week, the decision has been made to merge the two chapters into one. This merge better meets the needs of the entire south east Wisconsin area by combining the elders, trail guides, trail ambassadors, and volunteer efforts into one cohesive group of jeep and offroad loving people. The social media, chapter pages and other related content will be changed and merged into one chapter called Wrangler Riders of Southeast Wisconsin. Allenton and Sheboygan logos will be removed from all branding and everything will be replaced with the new logo.

Feel Good Jeep Story

Darrell Wagner a man from the Lake Township Ohio baseball team just won a 2018 Jeep thanks to Charlie’s Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram and Grogan’s Towne Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram. Wagner was one of 13 people invited by the Toledo Walleye hockey team to take part in the wrap up to their annual Chuck-a-Puck fundraising program. This year Darrell was one of these lucky 13 people that got the invite to go down on the ice and select one puck out of a pile of over a thousand hockey pucks that were nearly spilling out of the back of a …..wait for it….  RED 2018 JL that the team had pulled out onto the ice. There were a few contestants ahead of him, who one by one were asked their name and where they were from by an officiate of the event. When Darrell Wagner stepped up to the Jeep he leaned WAY IN, nearly to the back of the passenger seat, and pulled from what looked like the bottom of the pile. Each of the thousand plus hockey pucks had a number on the bottom. After much to do about nothing, and a ton of stalling, it was announced that the person holding the puck with the number 14302 on it had just won.

Wrangler Talk:

Testing 5 Ways to De-Rustify My Wrangler

Iron oxide (otherwise known as rust) – a chemical component of iron and oxygen there are 16 known iron oxides. Over time iron mixed with water and oxygen will disintegrate. For those Jeepers like me in the Salt Belt one thing we all hate that speeds up this process immensely is road salt. And this past winter, which by the way ended yesterday, I hope! We had more than the usual amounts of road salt poured onto our roads. Which has greatly increased the amount of rust on my Wrangler. especially those aftermarket bumpers, sliders, and skid plates. Now that Spring is here in Maryland, at least for the weekend, I am going to be testing out 5, yes I said 5, different rust treatments suggested to me by my fellow Jeepers during a poll I did on Social media.

Permatex Rust Treatmentkills old rust prevents new rust.  First…Clean the surface, rinse with water, there’s a spray can or a paint of liquid. I have both. This white liquid turns into a black coating when iron oxides are present. An additional primer isn’t needed but I like to add the self etching primer for maximum adhesion and corrosion resistance, then I spray with Krylon Rust Tough Enamel that eliminates rust. Probably overkill. This is what I have used in the past. It works but is not permanent.

Guest Interview:

Jerry Samouce with “Old Soldier Iron Works”

I am the son of a real life Rocket scientist, an ARMY veteran, a deep Patriot and a Jeeper, who grew up in Houston Texas and moved to North Carolina for the weather change. My family is made up of my lovely wife Tracy, my college aged daughter Avery, two dachshund doggies and 18 chickens. I have a bachelors degree in Psychology and a minor in Industrial Sculpture and spent many years as an avid Bronze-smith and Blacksmith on my spare time. My wife who had just purchased her first Jeep ask me to “Make” her a flagpole for her Jeep, which would let us open the tailgate. So, luckily, I invented the Freedom Flyer, and people LIKED it, a lot, and here we are.

Find out more about Jerry, Old Soldier Iron Works and the Freedom Flyer.

Must Have Stuff Pick-of-the-Week for your Jeep:

Jeep Wrangler Door Limiting Straps (Assorted Designs)

If you have a Wrangler then there’s one little piece of equipment that is often taken for granted, overlooked, or otherwise ignored and forgotten about. That is until it breaks. You use it every single time you get in and out of the Jeep, yet many of you never ever touch it. What am I talking about? The Door limiting straps! They are that little piece of material that helps eliminate door and fender dings by preventing your Jeep’s doors from swinging too wide. The ones I’m referring to can give your Jeep a little extra customization as they are made with
1 1/8” wide nylon webbing, sold in pairs and are available in multiple colors & cool patterns. They are about as easy to install as it gets, and adjust to the width of the door. Giving you the ability to stop that door opening where ever you want. You can find these just about anywhere, but all things jeep has them for under $15

Cherokee Love:

At my house I have two Cherokees to love.  The 1998 that I drive daily, and have been driving daily for 20 years, and the 1999 Cherokee that my daughter, Cassie, drives. Today I want to talk about the noises your Jeep makes.  Cassie comes to me yesterday and says that she’s hearing a squeaking noise from the 99.  I asked her a couple of questions. Does the noise change when you give the engine a little gas? You can diagnose issues right from the driver’s seat.  A squeaky belt will change when you increase or decrease the engine’s RPMs. Pressing the brakes slightly will tell you if the squeak is coming from there.  There are several things you can do to determine the source of the noise.

Camp Fireside Chat:

Josh manages to get a few hours work in on his NP242J rebuild.  Tammy Jeep Badge of Honor answered me about my extra Jeep badge of Honor for Hell’s Revenge!  Tony long Atlas transfer case wait, it’s only been 2 weeks?!?!?

And if you need a more official or scientific reason to get into the outdoors in the next month or so, plan to head out into the wilderness, the forest, or some area way outside of city limits, and away from any light pollution to check out The Eta Aquarids Meteor Shower. This is what the scientists call an above average shower, capable of producing up to 60 meteors per hour at its peak. The shower runs annually from April 19 to May 28. But it peaks this year on the night of May 6th. Most of the activity is seen in the Southern Hemisphere. In the Northern Hemisphere, the rate can reach about 30 meteors per hour. This meteor shower has a bit of a famous tie, as it caused by the dust particles left behind from Halley’s comet…. Which has been observed passing by planet earth every 75 years or so since ancient times. Pretty cool huh?
