Jeep JL Test Vehicle Erupts in Flames

It’s been making automotive news all over the place this week. A Jeep JL Wrangler caught on fire at the FCA Headquarters in Auburn Hills, Michigan, The silver JL Wrangler was sporting manufacturer plates (noted by the “M” on the plates) which is consistent with a Jeep test vehicle. The Auburn Hills location is also home to the Chrysler Technology Center, where new vehicles and experimental automotive technologies are frequently tested. The Wrangler caught on fire and the flames nearly engulfed the test Jeep. FCA security rushed to the scene to secure the site and the roads surrounding the burning Wrangler were shut down temporarily. It’s been making automotive news all over the place this week. Not Jeepers, but they get a big jeep wave for doing the right thing.

The Jeep had just left the Dollar General Store on Highway 63 outside of Waterloo Iowa and was heading south when the driver noticed a light on the dash warning her that a door was ajar. She pulled the Jeep off the highway onto the right hand shoulder, stopped and turned on her hazard lights. Thats when 9yr old Dylan exited the front passenger seat to close the back door. That is at least according the accident report that was filed after what happened next. Adam Hoffman, was traveling south on U.S. Highway 63/Logan Avenue around 3:35 p.m. when the Toyota minivan in front of him clipped a stopped Jeep Compass on the side of the road, veering to avoid the spray of debris and the minivan careening across all lanes and into a field…. He was shocked to see the Jeep that had just been struck roll onto 9yr old Dylan, trapping him. Hoffman and another passing motorist, Joe Edwards of Waterloo, immediately stopped to lend help. When Joe ran up to the scene, he realized what had happened. ‘We got to get this off of him.’ he said. Joe and Adam ran over and pushed the Jeep back onto its wheels, freeing the young boy. “We just tipped the vehicle back up and then called 911,” Edwards said. “We pushed it up and got it uprighted,” Hoffman said. “I just had to put my mind to it. It was what we had to do.

Don’t Let Your Fears Stop you

Remember that video of me on the entrance to Hell’s Revenge? If you haven’t seen it you should check it out on my YouTube. It was almost a year ago I wheeled that trail. That trip to Moab was supposed to be my annual trip with my sister but she couldn’t make it. I asked around for someone to go with me and I would even pay for the hotel etc. But no one could make it. I wanted to see Moab so bad I decided to go anyway by myself. I was pretty anxious going on a vacation by myself. I ended up spending hours by myself hiking in the national Parks around Moab, eating in restaurants by myself, drivign scenic roads and visiting a ghost town by myself. However I didn’t wheel by myself as you can tell by the video. That sunset ride and next day’s wheeling was absolutely amazing. Hell’s Revenge is one of the most intense trail rides I have ever encountered. It tested my limits, my limits of my fear of heights. The video is pretty funny listening to me however at the time it was super intense…but I made it. I did it and I would so do it again. I learned that trip that if I let my fears stop me from doing things I would have missed the most amazing vacation I have ever had. So like I said I shared  that experience on YouTube with my video from inside the Jeep as I slowly crawled up the entrance to Hell’s Revenge. A fellow Jeep girl watched that video recently. She was planning on wheeling that same trail just a couple of days after she watched my video. She decided she didn’t think she could wheel the trail as she was freaked out just watching my video. Here’s the interchange between myself and this Jeep Girl on YouTube.

Tech Talk:

Troubleshooting a No Start Issue

A no start condition, on your Jeep or really any engine, is usually caused by a lack of fuel, or a lack of spark, or a lack of air (and this last one generally falls into engine compression or lack thereof). Knowing that the cause of the problem lies in just one of these 3 specific areas will help you figure out what tests you need to perform, to find out what’s causing your jeep not to start. I’m going to share some of the most basic insights and tips that will help you narrow down your troubleshooting efforts. Before I jump into the specifics of what causes a no start condition, I want to clarify the difference between two common terms you’ll hear come up as you diagnose the problem on your Jeep. Cranks but Does Not Start Condition: In this type of condition, you turn the key and the engine in your Jeep cranks (turns over) but it doesn’t start (run).
