This Week In Jeep:

CaptureA Kansas woman died and her daughter was seriously injured this past Tuesday in Colorado after their Wrangler fell some 600 feet down a mountainside about 3 miles above St. Elmo. While trying to maneuver around a large rock in the road the 2014 Jeep Wrangler started to slide and ultimately left the road and slid down the slope.   Jennifer Lynn Orr, 43, of Wichita was driving the vehicle in a caravan of five privately owned Jeeps headed up Iron Chest Road from CR 295.  Iron Chest Road a four-wheel-drive road with steep drop-offs. They were at some 11,440 feet prior to the accident.  Iron Chest Road is a trail with a moderate to difficult rating (7 to 8) Trails.com says it is a classic hard-core trail with historic structures. The buildings at Iron Chest Mine are over 100 years old and are in relatively good condition.  Lifts, lockers, driving experience and a set of calm nerves are required to tackle this trail.  Authorities said the Chaffee County Communications Center received an emergency text about 12:30 p.m. and dispatched Chaffee County Search and Rescue North and other first responders to the scene.  Orr was pronounced dead at the scene, and her daughter was airlifted to Pueblo by helicopter.  We hate to hear when any Jeeper is injured and especially so when there is a loss of life.  Driving your rig off road is serious business and should never be taken lightly.  Our prayers go out to this family for their loss and injury.  I know we all hope for a speedy recovery for Jennifer’s daughter..

Wrangler Talk:

CaptureDid you know August is a time to celebrate… It’s the best of summertime, it’s my birthday (in 30 minutes to be exact) AND it’s the birthday month of the Wrangler… the JK/JKU Wrangler on August 28, 2006.  Which is why I decided I will honor this amazing vehicle that changed my life with part one of my series… What is a Wrangler.   A Wrangler… What is a wran·gler?  A person in charge of horses or other livestock on a ranch.  A person engaging in a lengthy and complicated quarrel or dispute.  Oh wait not that kinda wrangler. I’m talking about the Jeep Wrangler. There are several versions of the Wrangler,  4 generations to be exact.  The Jeep Wrangler family is more than just the JK’s/and JKU’s and even the new JL/JLU’s.  First let’s start with some history behind the wrangler then in my other parts I will talk more about the different generations of the Wrangler in upcoming episodes.  The Jeep Wrangler is a series of off-road vehicle models, manufactured by Jeep since 1986. The Wrangler was born from the World War II Jeep called the Willy’s MB. This Jeep was the iconic vehicle of WW2. Who knew it would create such an amazing lifestyle! The popularity of the Willy’s started up the production of a Jeep for civilians, CJ (Civilian Jeeps) produced by Willys, Kaiser-Jeep and American Motors Corporation (AMC) from the mid-1940s through 1980s. What sets the Wranglers apart from other vehicles… a separate body and frame, rigid live axles both front and rear, a tapering nose design with flared fenders, a fold-flat windshield, it can be driven without doors, part-time four-wheel drive systems, choice of high and low gearing, standard are open bodies with removable hard- or soft-tops.  The Wrangler’s were designed to be more comfortable on-road then the CJ in an attempt to attract more daily drivers – Which it did – the numbers of Wranglers on the roads are off the charts. They upgraded its suspension, drive-train, and interior, compared to the CJ line.

Jeep Momma Product Review:

Wild Boar Grab handles on Amazon

Capture

I bought these when I lifted my Jeep. Mainly for my passengers and also for when I’m off camber. But I still hold onto my center console.  $27 on Amazon!  EASY INSTALLATION: No Drilling, No cutting, No Dismantling, No complicated modifications! Provided Bolts right into existing mounting holes on your Jeep.  Ha!!! It says easy installation… Even the guy I found on youtube doing the install it looked easy. But it wasn’t for me. You need to line up both bolts and spacers to go into the factory spots simultaneously. That wasn’t easy. Maybe if I folded down my windshield it would have been easier.  Assists in Entering and Exiting the Jeep. Grab bars help you get in/out of your Wrangler easily and comfortable. PACKAGE: 2 x Front Grab Handles, 4 x Spacers & Bolts, 1 x Installation Instruction.

Material: 1. High quality aluminum alloy grab handles, durable & anti-corrosion.  2. Durable rubber grips, anti-slip and comfortable to hold.

Cherokee Love:

CaptureCaptureOne of the most frustrating things about the Jeep Cherokee and it’s 4.0L engine is the somewhat brittle exhaust manifold.  Theories for the reasons for the manifold breaks range from bad motor mounts, transmission mount, or even excessive heat from the output of 6 cylinders.  Keep in mind 8 cylinders usually exhaust into two manifolds, 4 cylinders of heat to each.  I recently received a warranty replacement from Amazon for the Dorman exhaust manifold I installed on my 98 Jeep Cherokee back in Feb of 2017.  I’m going to try something that addresses one of the theories. The inability of the exhaust to flex, causing the cracking of the manifold.  I ordered a 6″ Heavy Duty Stainless Steel Exhaust Flex Pipe overall 10″ long.  Where the down pipe exits the manifold and then passes from the driver’s side to the passenger side just behind the transmission bell housing I’ll install this “flexy” pipe.  The stainless steel braid should allow moderate flex as the torquey 4.0l is called upon to move my Cherokee down the road or the trail.  I guess the success or fail of this test will be how long this exhaust manifold lasts before the tale tale sign of the tick tick tick of the next exhaust leak.  Kristian M. wrote to me recently to offer up what he uses.  A Graywerks manifold. He says after 3 years, no leaks or cracks.  Thanks Kris, I’ll put this one on my list of one to try next.
